“What’s Gambling Really Costing You?” DVD Launch Event |

Summary of Event: |
The new “What’s Gambling Really Costing You?” DVD was launched in May 14th at SBS Atrium during Responsible Gambling Awareness Week 2012. The resource was developed by the NSW Government through the Responsible Gambling Fund (RGF) in partnership with MHCS as part of the NSW Government’s Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Problem Gambling Awareness Campaign to help tackle problem gambling across multicultural communities by breaking through cultural barriers to address the issue of gambling. The “What’s Gambling Really Costing You?” DVD was produced for RGF and MHCS by Why Documentaries with the support of Arab Council Australia, Auburn Asian Welfare, Greek Welfare Centre, Co.As.It and Vietnamese Community in Australia NSW Chapter and in consultation with the Multicultural Problem Gambling Service for NSW.

The Policy and Implementation Plan for Healthy Culturally Diverse Communities 2012-2016, a plan to deliver better health outcomes to people from diverse backgrounds in NSW was launch on the 26th April by the Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research Jillian Skinner, and the Minister for Citizenship and Communities and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Victor Dominello. This launch of the policy recognises the need to provide better health services to those from culturally, religiously and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The Minister for Health and Minister for Medical Research, Jillian Skinner MP, and the Minister for Citizenship and Communities, Victor Dominello MP launched the Anti Tobacco Grants Program for Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese and emerging communities in NSW 30th May at the NSW Parliament House. The purpose of the Grants Program is to contribute to a reduction in tobacco-related harm among Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese and small and emerging communities in NSW by enabling innovative tobacco control activities.

Dietitian Nilakshi Gunatillaka spreads the Get Healthy message to the Sri Lankan community through a healthy eating information session Saturday 18th February at the Lankarama Summer Food Festival organised by the Sri Lankan Buddhist Vihara Association (SLBVA). The information session was part of MHCS’ Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service Campaign targeting the Filipino, Indian (Hindi) and Sri Lankan (Sinhalese and Tamil) speaking communities. |

MHCS conducts surveys at 2012 Year of the Dragon New Year Chinese and Vietnamese Festivals

Summary of Event: |
On its 7th year of successful participation in the Chinese and Vietnamese NSW Year Festivals in Sydney, MHCS once again conducted research surveys for major communication campaigns including the Problem Gambling CALD Awareness Campaign, Chinese Volunteering Project and the Multilingual Quitline.
