Healthy Hearing and Your Baby DVD

Summary


A DVD prepared by the NSW Statewide Infant Screening-Hearing (SWISH) Program to introduce parents who are expecting a baby to the SWISH program. The DVD provides information about the screening equipment and process, how referrals are made, what happens during a diagnostic assessment and what information and support is available to parents throughout these stages.

Summary


This resource provides recently arrived African communities with clear information about health checks and procedures in Australia.
Through drama sequences the video answers the following questions:

What is a Medicare Card and where can it be used?
What does Bulk Billing mean?
Why is it important to have your children immunised?
Why is it important to wash your hands with soap?
Why is it important to arrive on time to see the doctor?
How do you call for an ambulance in an emergency?
The DVD can be viewed in either English, Dinka, Kirundi, Swahili, Krio, Juba Arabic or Liberian Pidgin English and runs for approx 16 minutes.

"Breathing Space" tells the stories of three people with TB: their journey from diagnosis to treatments available from Chest clinics and other public health systems in Australia. The DVD dispels many of the myths and misconceptions about TB, and answers some of the following important questions:

  • Is the screening process confidential?
  • How much does screening and treatment cost?

This e-learning program is designed to enhance health care professional’s ability to communicate with culturally and linguistically diverse patients.

Good communication skills and the ability to tailor health care delivery to meet the specific needs of patients are essential skills for health care professionals. This interactive multimedia learning program which uses text, audio and video to develop these skills.

The program uses a scenario of a patient, an Australian citizen born in Mainland China, and is told from a nurse’s perspective – it’s based on experiences from practicing nurses.

The scenario is divided into four parts, each with a series of questions to help the user focus on specific issues in communicating with this patient. On completion the user can print a certificate of completion.

The program takes around 30 minutes to complete and provides resources in PDF format that the user can download and/or print, covering a range of topics including use of interpreters, Chinese herbal medicine and useful websites
