The Healthy and Tasty Challenge 2009 CALD Recipe Competitions was a unique, successful and popular campaign that targeted 6 communities reaching 8 language groups namely Chinese (Cantonese & Mandarin), Filipino, Italian, Samoan, Sri Lankan (Sinhalese & Tamil) and Tongan.  It was designed to communicate the importance of lifestyle changes in terms of food consumption and exercise, using culturally relevant strategies that addressed cultural beliefs and practices regarding diet, food and body image and informed CALD communities about simple but achievable alternatives such as walking, bike riding and consuming smaller portions of food.

The NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service (MHCS) was commissioned in 2008 by the Australian Better Health Initiative (ABHI) to support their national “Measure Up” campaign to promote the healthy eating message “2 & 5” a daily diet of 2 serves of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables every day to prevent Diabetes and other chronic diseases.  It focused on these language groups through specific activities and targeted the communities through mass media campaigns such as mail outs, information dissemination through general practitioners, free editorials, free radio spots, and community events.
