Socially active in the community

“Being socially connected gives me great courage and makes me feel strong” – Dimitra Micos OAM, 76 years old.
Caring, giving, compassionate, with an unyielding commitment to community services. These are just a few of the ways in which the Greek community describe Dimitra Micos OAM.
Dimitra is well known for warmly greeting everyone she meets with a radiant smile and an unforgettable firm handshake. Originally from Kalamata, the capital of Messenia in southern Greece, Dimitra migrated to Australia when she was 19 to begin a new chapter of her life.
At just 32 years old, Dimitra faced the tragic loss of her husband. She dedicated herself to raising her four children and found her passion for serving the community.
For almost four decades, Dimitra has volunteered in a local community soup kitchen, where she serves meals to people experiencing hardship and homelessness. Her compassion and dedication extend to supporting the ageing Greek community through programs and services at the Greek Welfare Centre.
Being socially active gives Dimitra energy and she believes that having different interests is the key to healthy ageing. To stay physically active, she is part of a traditional Greek cultural dance group. She also finds joy in singing in her local community choir.
While people thanked for her selfless devotion and great contribution to the community, she said with gratitude: “Serving others has been a great blessing in my life. I feel socially connected and it gives me great courage and makes me feel strong.”
