Staying physically active - Amir’s tip for a healthy life

Amir Salem OAM, 82 years old.

“When I received the Order of Australia Medal, my children and grandchildren said that they were very proud of me. I was overjoyed that I made them proud because you know, any father wants to get his kids to be proud of him.” – Amir Salem OAM, 82 years old.

At 82 years old, Amir Salem is happy and healthy. Originally from Egypt, Amir migrated to Australia decades ago, and now he’s a proud father and grandfather.

“I go to the gym four times a week to keep physically active,” said Amir. “I feel fortunate to maintain a good fitness level for my age. I encourage everyone to stay active as they age. Simply taking a short walk helps because if you don’t, your body will get weaker.”

Amir has always been active and was a basketball player in his youth. But a fall a few years ago when he tripped over a small concrete barrier was a wake-up call. Though he didn’t suffer serious injuries, doctors advised him to build stronger muscles to reduce the risk of future falls. With his daughter’s encouragement, Amir joined a seniors’ gym and began a tailored fitness program designed specifically for older adults.

Amir’s three top tips for healthy aging are eating healthy food, being physically active and having a harmonious family life.  Amir also highlights the importance of staying socially connected. He volunteers with the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS), helping lead the Older Person’s in Cultural Transition (OPICT) Program. The seven-week program supports Arabic speaking older men and women from refugee backgrounds as they explore topics like healthy aging and settling in Australia.

His community contributions haven’t gone unnoticed. Amir was awarded the Order of Australia Medal, an honour that filled him with pride.
