Multicultural Health Week 2026

Theme: Improving our mental health and wellbeing through physical activity

Physical activity is an effective and accessible way to support our mental health and wellbeing at every age. For children, adults and older people, regular physical activity can improve sleep, raise energy levels, enhance confidence and self-esteem, and support better mood and concentration. Being physically active also helps reduce stress, ease symptoms of anxiety and lower the risk of cancer and chronic health conditions.

Key messages

Caring for your mental health is as important as caring for your physical health. Moving your body in any way can support mental health and wellbeing.

  • For children and young people, physical activity helps to learn and concentrate, improve self-confidence, improve sleep, manage stress and make connections and friendships.
  • For adults, physical activity helps to improve sleep, raise energy levels, improve confidence and self-esteem, improve mood and concentration, reduce loneliness, reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety and reduce their risk of cancer and chronic health conditions.
  • For older people, physical activity helps in thinking more clearly, maintaining and improving memory, keeping the brain healthy, reducing the risk of falls, and staying more independent.
  • For people with or recovering from cancer or chronic health conditions, physical activity can help with treatment, recovery and overall wellbeing.
  • For people with mental health conditions, physical activity helps to improve mood, reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety and support recovery.

Simple steps to being physically active for better mental health

  • Find an activity you enjoy, such as walking, tai chi, yoga, swimming, or dancing. Doing it regularly is even better.
  • Be physically active with family and friends. Try walking, riding a bike, playing a sport, or dancing together.
  • Be physically active in nature. Try walking in the park, swimming at the beach or at a pool, or gardening.
  • Move throughout the day. Walk to the shops or bus stop, stretch between activities or stand up regularly if you sit for long periods.
  • Sleep well. Try to keep a regular bedtime, reduce noise, heat, and light in your bedroom, and avoid screens before bedtime.

Tell us how physical activity supports your mental health and well-being. Your story could inspire others. Submit your story here.
