Janey’s treasure

“Health is a treasure. Even if you have a lot of money but if you don’t have good health, you’re in a big trouble. I didn’t think it as much until one day I fell on the street. I realised something went wrong. Now I go to see my GP regularly to keep up with medical checkups because prevention is better than cure.” -- Janey Tham, 60s.
Originally from Hong Kong, Janey is a vibrant woman in her 60s, a proud mother of three daughters, and a passionate advocate for the Chinese Australian community. In 1996, she joined a community radio station and later became its owner, dedicated to keeping Chinese Australians informed about news and current affairs. Broadcasting in both Cantonese and Mandarin, the station keeps the community informed with the information they need to navigate life in Australia.
A key focus of Janey’s programming is health - something she prioritises in her own life. Balancing her roles as a broadcaster, active community member, and mother, Janey says that she rarely has time to think about her age. When she fell on the street, it was a reminder about importance of looking after her own health.
Since then, Janey has embraced a proactive approach to ageing. She regularly visits her doctor and keeps up with cancer screenings and health checks - something she strongly encourages others to do as well.
“Prevention is better than cure,” she adds. Through her radio programs and personal example, Janey is spreading a powerful message of the importance of ageing with good health.
