Our approach incorporates cultural responsiveness with evidence-based practice. Our research has provided unique insights into award winning multilingual campaigns.

MHCS is available for research projects with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities in NSW. We are experienced in managing major projects, such as community surveys, consultations with CALD communities and qualitative research. MHCS has also developed good practice models in conducting focus groups in languages other than English.  Previous projects are summarised below.

Past MHCS Projects

 
Focus Groups
  • Focus groups for the multilingual men's reproductive health resource "A users' guide: what every man needs to know", for Andrology Australia. Languages included Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Farsi, Greek, Italian, Khmer, Korean, Serbian and Turkish.
  • Focus testing of the Youthsafe fact sheet "Helping teenagers become safer drivers" for Arabic and Chinese speaking parents.
  • Project for the National Breast Cancer Centre's National Breast Awareness campaign. This included Included focus groups with Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Italian and Vietnamese women on their perceptions of reactions to communication material and advertisements for the campaign, and formative research on beliefs and barriers to be considered for the campaign.

 Market and Formative Research

  • Market and formative research for the Cancer Institute of NSW on smoking cessation and CALD communities. This included establishing the state's first multilingual Quitline.
  • Formative research for the smoke alarms campaign for Arabic, Chinese and Vietnamese speakers, including focus groups and intercept surveys (NSW Health Department Injury Branch).
  • Research for the Roads and Transit Authority into the attitudes and knowledge of Croatian, Macedonian and Turkish community members to determine what information they need about motor vehicle occupant restraints.
  • Research for Kidsafe Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia to measure knowledge of parents from Arabic, Mandarin and Vietnamese speaking communities about child pedestrian and bicycle safety.

 Surveys

  • Survey on the needs for health information in the Arabic and Khmer communities.
  • NSW Health Surveys - consultations on translation and interviews, in collaboration with the NSW Health Epidemiology Branch.

 Evaluations

  • Evaluation of a pilot radio program to disseminate health messages on Somali Radio.
  • Development, implementation and evaluation of a communication strategy on Cervical Screening for Arabic, Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin and Spanish speaking women for The NSW Cervical Screening Program
  • Evaluation of multicultural skills for health staff in South Western Sydney Local Health District.
  • Multilingual Early Childhood Resources - an assessment of information needs and use of early childhood workers among CALD communities in NSW.

 Consultations

  • Consultations with both service providers and CALD communities to develop a service plan for Families First initiatives in South Western Sydney. commissioned by the Department of Community Services)
  • Consultation with women from 16 communities to assess resources in languages other than English developed by Breast Screen NSW.
