Healthy Horizons
The Healthy Horizons online platform aims to support migrant and refugee women to better understand their health. The information available in English, Mandarin and Arabic describes common women's health conditions, provides health tips, and helps women navigate the Australian healthcare system.
Breast Cancer and Family History
Most women who are diagnosed with breast cancer don’t have a family history of the disease. Breast cancer is a common disease which is largely associated with increasing age. Developing breast cancer does not mean you have necessarily inherited a faulty gene, or that you will pass it on to your children. The earlier a cancer is detected, the greater the likelihood of successful treatment.
Detecting Breast Cancer Early is Vital
Mammograms (breast x-rays) can detect cancers long before they can be seen or felt by you or your doctor. Almost all breast cancers found in the earliest stage can be treated successfully. Breast Screen NSW mammograms are free and performed by female radiographers. Interpreters are free and available to help women make breast screening appointments. Group bookings can be arranged and free interpreters can be organised to attend group appointments. You do not need a referral from your doctor but we encourage you to bring your doctor’s details to your appointment.
Your Visit to a BreastScreen NSW Assessment Clinic
A team of specialists at the Assessment Clinic will guide you through your visit. They understand the anxiety you may be feeling and aim to provide a timely result.
