I first met Andreas 40 plus years ago. My parents had a milk bar in Earlwood and Andreas had a Greek biscuit shop next door. I would often go and stare at his kourabeides in the window and wait for my dad to buy me and my siblings some.

In filipino culture we call our grandma’s Lola. I believe my lola and I have a very well connected relationship.

Every time I played soccer my grandma was right there on the sidelines cheering the loudest, even loder then the coach.

My South African gogo plays an important role in my life, not only as a source of wisdom and cultural knowledge, but also as my partner in staying active and healthy. Together we do zumba, which keeps us moving, laughing, and full of energy.

In Somalia we call our grandfather awowo. I believe I have a special connection with him. In Somali culture, and my religious beliefs, it is important to respect your elders. Every week I go to my grandfather and talk about our old memories and he tells me about his childhood.

My nunnu is a very important man in my life, he loves me unconditionally and is always excited to tell me about the latest game show he watches and all the problems with it.

I joined this program because I love to talk to others about their culture and share my own.

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) is home to a wonderfully diverse population, with over 49,000 residents speaking a language other than English. This rich tapestry of cultures brings unique needs, particularly for older community members who may face significant barriers to accessing health services and information.
